As Omaha is a near cousin of Texas Hold’em many people believe that, because the game is played in the same way (with the exception of the two additional hole cards), much the same poker strategies apply. Inasmuch as there is an element of truth in that, some of the basic fundamentals that are found in Texas Hold’em do not hold the same importance in Omaha.

This article relates to Omaha Hi games only. Omaha Hi/Lo has a much different perspective.

Opening Hand Selection.

In Omaha there are good hands that will lead to a high draw, flush or boat. There is little else. A pair of aces with nothing to support it does not constitute a good hand and is better folded than played against Kh Qs Qd Jh. Other good hands to consider playing are any which have four cards ranked 9 or better, with no more than two suited and no more than two of the same rank.

Position.

Position has a fraction of the value in Omaha as it has in Texas Hold´em, as betting aggressively from early position is often a winning strategy. As Omaha is a game with so many possible combinations, when you are dealt one that with great potential, you need to get as much into the pot as possible pre-flop and then, if you flop a set or have multiple top outs possible, raise aggressively once more. In Omaha, one of the biggest mistakes that you can make is giving you opponents a free card or letting them get one cheaply when you are in prime position.

Bluffing.

If anything, bluffing is more straightforward in Omaha than it is in Texas Hold´em. Players are looking at all the possible combinations of cards that have the ascendency over their hands, so if an ace and two queens were drawn, or three high cards of the same suit, a major bluff post flop would imply that you had caught a boat or top flush.

Bluffing after the turn is not recommended, as players who have got to the turn are more likely to have a good hand already, or be into the pot for so much that it is worthwhile for them to call you.

Play Fewer Hands.

There is a myth in Omaha that you should be involved in more hands than you would be in Texas Hold´em because of the greater number of opportunities. In fact the reverse is true. Disciplined, patient play will see you win fewer hands but with bigger pots in Omaha as everybody else tends to believe this myth. Save your chips on anything less than prime opening hands for bigger wins when you connect with a monster.

Focus on Your Opponents.

Inasmuch as identifying the betting traits of your opponents is important to successful Texas Hold´em, in Omaha it is doubly so. “Slow players” are not so likely to be profitable in Omaha, as the later cards can demolish their top post-flop set – so take advantage of players who regularly limp into the pot.

Any player raising aggressively pre-flop who would be considered “out of position” in a game of Texas Hold´em should be avoided, as should tight aggressive players who come out with all guns blazing post flop- they know that they have the odds in their favour.

With these few adjustments to your game, whether you are playing in ring games or multi table poker tournaments, you should be become a profitable Omaha player.

Bluffing is an important part of the game of poker, and as opposing players can never be sure what you have in your hand, once you have opened the betting with a bluff, they have to be convinced that they are holding a hand with at least the potential to be better than yours in order to call your bet.

The bluffer who bets first is the bluffer who wins more often, and inasmuch as it is important to not get carried away with the “strategy”, bluffing too infrequently could be damaging your bankroll.

Both tight aggressive and tight passive players have a reputation for high opening hand selection and, when playing on a particularly observant table, will find that they win pots that they enter because everybody else realises that they must have a strong hand (as they have entered the game) and folds. Consequently they do not win as many chips as they might, because nobody wants to take on their premium hands.

This can present a problem to the tight player – particularly on short-handed tables – because it prevents them from becoming competitive in the later stages of tournaments, and subdues their potential for profitable poker at the ring tables. The answer is to bluff a little more often that you normally would.

Ideally establish a table image that you are a tight player and when the opportunity presents itself (in late position with a handful of limps into the pot in front of you), play an outrageous bluff with nothing in your hand. On the first couple of occasions your opponents will fold – you may even catch a bonus on the flop if somebody decides to go with you – but eventually the other poker players will realise that you cannot be getting the great cards as often as you imply with your betting action. That will set them wondering, and make them inclined to take you on again with your premium hands.

It can actually be advantageous to you if you get caught bluffing. Your observant playing partners had you noted as being a tight player – now they are confused and do not know what to expect. You may lose a few chips on the times that it happens, but it will result in your bets on strong hands getting called by weaker ones further into the game.

Bluffing is a great ploy to vary your play and prevent you from becoming too predictable. If you get away with it – you win. If you get caught doing it – you win. Provided you do not give away outrageous tells by timing your betting action in an obvious manner, increasing the frequency of your bluffs will take your game to a newer height.

Seven Card Stud Poker is one of the less frequently played games at online poker sites, but it is a much simpler game to understand and master. In fact it is essential for players who enjoy “mixed games” of poker to absorb the best strategies in draw styles of poker, to compliment their knowledge of Hold´em and Omaha.

Seven Card Stud is always played “Fixed Limit” and the hand rankings are the same as in Hold´em. Each player pays an “ante” into the pot at the beginning of the hand, and three cards are initially dealt to each player – two that only you can see and one “face up” that everyone can see. A round of betting follows this, and each subsequent card that is dealt, with the next three cards being open (face up), and the final card only viewable to you.

Your focus in Stud should be on mentally registering all the open cards you can see during the various stages of the game, and using this information to determine the odds of you making your hand, or an opponent making a better hand than you. By applying this information, your calculations regarding your “expected value” of a hand will be more accurate and therefore enable you to know when to increase your betting or to fold.

The player with the lowest open card after the initial deal will start the betting with either a “bring-in” or a bet, depending on the strength of their hand. Subsequent rounds of betting are started by the player who has the best hand showing, using only their open cards, and therefore your position on the table in relation to the betting frequently changes.

Therefore position does not hold the same relevance as it does in Hold´em or Omaha, although having a strong hand partially concealed by your two face-down cards can be of great advantage when you are close to the end of the betting rotation. It is also useful to see the betting action that has preceded your turn, as another player may also have caught a strong hand, and is possibly giving you a “tell” as to its relevant strength, by the speed at which s/he makes their bet.

Seven Card Stud is most widely played on PokerStars, with three times the traffic for Seven Card Stud Poker than any other site. They have a wide range of stakes available at their ring game tables to suit the novice through to the most advanced player, and they also have several Stud and mixed poker tournaments each day.

Pot Limit Omaha is a very different game from any Texas Hold´em game you may have played, although if you have an understanding of what makes a good Hold´em player you should do well in PLO, as many of the strategies are similar.

The first thing to understand is how the hands are formed. Each player is dealt four hole cards rather than two, with three cards drawn on the flop, one on the turn and a final card on the river. The winner is the player who can compile the best five card hand using two from their pocket cards and three from the community cards.

Some players confuse the distribution of the cards that make up a hand, as in Hold´em you may at times play one from your hand with four on the table, or feel that your best hand is three from the pocket and two of the community cards, but there is not this kind of flexibility in Omaha.

Because of the many varied combinations that can be made with the extra two cards, the winning hand is generally much higher ranking than you would see in a Hold´em game, with full houses and flushes regularly being the top hand and quads being far more common than you may be used to. Low straight hands virtually never win a hand, and trips, two pairs and lesser hands should be consigned to the muck heap (except when bluffing and playing short-handed at the end of a tournament).

Your opening hand selection should be quite high. High ranking pairs, suited cards and connectors give the best opportunities for making winning hands. Low ranking cards and three of a kind should be folded. So, Ah Kh Kd Qd would be considered to be a good opening hand, but do not get too carried away with pre-flop madness, because if the flop is full of low spades and clubs your pair of Kings is likely to get busted by trip fours!

If the flop comes down in your favour, you have to bet ultra-aggressively. In Omaha, what might be the nuts post flop may well be relegated to second or third best hand in later rounds, and if you are holding what appears to be the best hand possible, it is to your advantage to win the pot before any further cards are drawn.

For example, the flop shows As Jc Tc and now you are holding top straight, however the possibilities exist for a club flush, a full house, quads or for somebody holding (say) Qh Th to draw a King and share the pot with you.

Position is as vital in pot limit games as it is in No Limit, however because the dynamics of a hand can change so much in Omaha, when you are in late position you should never allow players in front of you to get a free card. This may mean that you find yourself bluffing more frequently than you are used to, but provided you are only playing your premium hands throughout the game, players who have tried to limp in to the next round of betting will generally fold.

If you can be aware of your outs, appreciate that there are twice as many cards out on the table (so more outs exist for other players also), play your premium hands only and bet aggressively when the opportunity comes, then you will make a fine Omaha player.

Lucky Ace Poker belongs to one of the leading online poker networks in the world – the 888 Poker Group. As such, members of its site rubs shoulders with players who have migrated onto the network from 888.coms´ casino enterprises, Littlewoods football pools and the Racing Post web site – not particularly strong pedigrees for the skills and patience required to be a successful multi-table tournament player – and therefore the network has acquired the reputation for very weak “fishy” opposition.

As the network no longer allows players from the US to use its site, the majority of the action takes place during the European evening both on the ring tables and in the tournaments.

Outside of Texas Hold´em, there is very little tournament action in other games, but players who enjoy acquiring value from their games will be glad to know that many of the opportunities on Lucky Ace Poker are substantially undersubscribed.

Regular games are comprised of a mixture of regular low entry multi-table tournaments – often freezeout guaranteed games – a wide selection of freerolls available to new members and qualifiers to the network´s Daily Challenge Series.

Tournaments in any depth commence from mid-day (UK time) and start to tail off around 10.00pm. Low entry tournament games up to $5.00 + $0.50 are normally guaranteed to 100x the stake (so, a $3.00 + $0.30 guarantees $300.00 prize fund) and usually pay out to the top ten players.

Beyond that level, there are a few games each evening with a $5.000 guarantee that have a $20.00 + $2.00 buy-in, and the Monday Twins Tournament – two innovative tournaments run within 30 minutes of each other with a potential $10.000 bonus for winning both!

For consistent multi-table tournament players, the Daily Challenge represents excellent value. Comprising of a different headline competition every day, not only are the final events frequently undersubscribed, but so too the satellite events.

For example, Tuesdays Challenge is a $12.500 NLHE freezeout with a $100 + $9 buy-in, however just two hours before this game, there is a $21 + $2 satellite with 15 seats guaranteed for the final event.

This scenario continues throughout the week until the Sunday $50.000 Gtd Challenge, which has a buy-in of $75 + $5, is preceded by a $16 qualifier – again guaranteeing 15 seats, and often not attracting the 75 paying entrants it needs to make the qualifier viable to the site.

In terms of the loose standard of play and regular value to be acquired in guaranteed and “Challenge” tournaments, Lucky Ace Poker has to be one of the best poker sites to get involved with.

Bankroll management is an area of poker that many new or inexperienced players ignore. As enthusiastic as one may be to leap onto the tables with a stack of chips and try to turn over the initial deposit bonus in one day, there is a reason for bankroll management in poker, and although some players will get lucky on their first attempt, it is estimated that 75% of all new players lose their funds within a few days and have to reload their accounts to continue playing.

Lucky Ace Poker Bankroll Booster
Deposit $400 get $100 Extra Instantly Free + Earn $300 More as you Play – www.luckyacepoker.com

Unless you have extensively practised (and even if you are very rich) it is not advisable to immediately sign up with one of the major poker rooms offering huge bonuses if you invest hundreds or thousands of dollars with them. The best way to start is on one of the “easier” web sites with a lower volume of traffic and standard of play. This way, you will be able to learn the basics of playing for cash before attempting to mix it with the professionals. It will also give you valuable experience about opening hand selections, learning how to calculate odds and EV in a real time situation and the importance of discipline and patience at the table.

Being on a lower grade of site will also give you the opportunity to establish good bankroll management practises. There is a factor in poker known as “variance” – which acknowledges that no matter how well you are playing there will be times when the cards run for you, and times when they run against you. The purpose of bankroll management is to ensure that when you are not being so fortunate with the cards, that you avoid being wiped out and have to reload your account again.

Therefore there is a scale in place which influences what level you should be playing at, and also indicates how well (or not) you are doing overall. It is generally accepted that a new player should be playing ring games at a big blind level which represents around 1/300th of their total funds. Therefore if you have deposited $150, you should be playing at $0.25/$0.50 and take just $25.00 to the table with you (equivalent to 50x big blind). As you win (and your bonuses kick in) you can play on the higher staked tables. If you lose, you should go down a level until your game is sufficiently advanced to play at this standard.

Tournament and Sit ´n´ Go players should invest 1/20th of their funds into a tournament. So, for a player with $150 in their account, this would mean a game where the entry is no more than $6.00 plus rake. It seems particularly low to many players, but it has been generally accepted that over a period of time you will settle in a level that is comfortable and profitable for you, while avoiding the risks of variance to your bankroll.

As mentioned above, there are different standards of play at the same stake levels on different web sites. Just because you have done well in one particular poker room, it does not guarantee that you will do equally as well at another. However, by using correct bankroll management to determine your choice of game, it will ensure that your poker experience is more enjoyable and has a greater chance of being profitable.

Online ring games are the most common way in which people choose to play poker. Good disciplined players appreciated that there is not so much reliance on good fortune at a ring table as there is in a tournament, and whereas you cannot wait forever in a tournament for a good pair of cards, patience on a full ring game can be a profitable virtue. However, there are a few tricks the pros use to maximise their opportunities that new players could also benefit from.

Picking the right table to play on is essential. In the lobby area of your online poker site, there is a column which indicates how many players on a specific table are seeing flop. The “more the merrier” is the goal, as the higher the number of players seeing flop, the greater value for the victor. However, do not fall into the trap of playing loose, just because everybody else is.

Take the full complement of chips allowed to the table, because this will make sure that you are able to gain the most from those big pot wins. Certain web sites impose limits on the number of Big Blinds you are allowed to bring to the table, so make sure that you know what they are and check to see if many players are already way above that limit because of their winnings to date.

Always wait for the Big Blind to come round to you naturally. When you sit at a table for the first time, you are invited to pay a BB to get involved in the next hand. Don´t! The additional time you will be sitting out will allow you the opportunity to observe the playing patterns of your adversaries, note their strengths and their weaknesses, and give you a better chance to take advantage of them.

Change seats if you want to. Ideally, you should have all the aggressive players to your right and your passive players to your left. That way, you will be able to pick up bigger pots from the aggressive players when drawing a top hand, and bet into the passive players if you are trying to pinch some blinds. Do not feel embarrassed by looking to get yourself into the best position. After all, you are there to win these people´s money!

Finally, take your time. There is a big difference between impulse and instinct and you should take a pause before any action – even folding. Consider the knowledge you have acquired about your opponents while sitting at the table, and do not think that just because you have a certain set of cards you should act in a certain manner. Always consider position, always take the edge when you have one and never be afraid to fold.

Now all you need is the cards!

With online poker being so readily accessible to a market of millions of players, the poker rooms have become extremely competitive in the offers that they make to attract clients.

Sign-up bonuses are becoming larger and larger, bigger commissions are offered in rakeback schemes and Jackpot competitions are being introduced to tempt players with the potential of ever increasing prizes. However, there is an expression in commerce – Caveat Emptor – which means “Buyer Beware”, and this is equally applicable when choosing which company to honour with your business.

It is important, when attracted by substantial sums of initial deposit bonuses, that you read the small print carefully. “150% up to $1.000” is exactly what is on offer, but how hard is the offer to redeem? In nearly all cases you have to play a number of raked hands in order to claim your bonus, and the credit you receive for these (as well as the number of hands required) varies from site to site.

For a beginner, it is important not to necessarily go for the biggest bonus available. It has to be achievable and at a stake limit with which you are comfortable playing. Making your bonus is great, but if you have used up all your initial funds to achieve it, what have you gained?

Bonuses can be released incrementally, or in one lump sum – the former is better as it gives you an increasing bankroll as you go along. However, this has lead to a new type of player, the Bonus Hunter, who will just sit at a table for hours on end, hardly ever playing a hand until they have cleared their target rake, and move off to do it all again on another site. Some sites offer a mix of immediate bonus and incremental release, and these can be more appealing if you do not lose other benefits.

For this reason, we suggest that old and new players alike investigate the options available with Lucky Ace Poker. Although this site only offers an initial deposit bonus of 100% up to $400, the first 25% of your deposit is released immediately into your account to be used (not to be withdrawn yet), with the remainder being released in incremental stages through a sliding scale of player points.

What is so attractive about playing on this site is that it is one of the leading poker rooms within the 888.com network, and the standard of play is particularly low, with most of it having migrated from the 888 sports betting or casino sites – typically players lacking in patience. Therefore, the number of players seeing flop per hand is significantly higher than on some other sites, which represents value to players of average (and higher) standard.

Furthermore, Lucky Ace Poker offers a rakeback scheme of 27% with fast-track to VIP status – enabling you to clear your points requirement faster as you receive an enhanced credit for each game. There is also a “Daily Challenge” program, worth up to $50k, a series of new depositors freerolls worth $3.500 each week and a free poker odds calculator, just in case you get confused making those marginal decisions.

It is better for new players not to leap in for the largest sum of money if it is going to be difficult to achieve or the quality of play is of such a high standard that you are exposed to the risk of losing all your deposit. This is why, beginning your cash poker carer on Lucky Ace Poker gives you the opportunity to learn through experience while clearing you bonus, and allowing you to move onto another site when you have the necessary skills to make the larger bonuses more achievable.

All of our articles are filled with fascinating information and helpful ideas on how you can improve your poker, however for those that do not have the patience to read through the entire web site (or those who are just slow readers) here is a breakdown of our Top Ten Tips:-

Always play to your bankroll.

Yes, we nag constantly about this, but it is an excellent habit to get into right from the very beginning, and could save you a fortune over time. Select your game from where your bankroll allows you to play – at least 300 times the Big Blind for a cash game and 20 times the buy-in for a Sit ´n´ Go or Multi-Table Tournament.

Sit down with the maximum

If you sit down with the maximum amount allowed for the table, you are more likely to win more from your best wins.

Sit to the left of a good player

A little bit of table observation will guide you to who the best player is. If you sit to his left, you will always have the advantage over him.

Keep the fish to the right

As the money is circulating clockwise around the table, you will be able to pick your betting action after all the fish have played when in late position. As so many fish go into the pot pre-flop, there will be greater value in a good hand for you.

Keep notes on all the players

This is especially important for knowing where to sit on your next visit to the tables. The more comprehensive your notes, the greater chance you have of winning on each subsequent session.

Sit out the first blinds and watch

There are going to be players that you may not be familiar with when you first sit down. Observe them for a while – this will give you some valuable clues about how to play them.

Pick the right table

In the lobby you will find a “Players per flop” column. Aim for the tables with the highest percentages, as these are the tables with the players who have the loosest opening hand criteria. They will be paying into pots they have little chance of winning, so you should go and take advantage of them.

Know your odds and your outs

By understanding your chances of winning and the “expected value” of betting at specific points of the hand, you will always come out a winner.

Never show your cards

If you have just won a hand without going to showdown always muck your cards. Never give the opposition any free information about you – make them pay for it every time!

Never bluff a “weekend” player

“Weekend” players are the loosest, passive “calling stations”, who will call/check every hand all the way up until the river. Although these guys may start with nothing, if you are not favourite pre-flop, the odds are firmly on their side.

That is our Top Ten Tips for the new player just finding his poker feet. Of course, there is far more valuable information (and greater depth) in the articles amongst these pages, so if there is something that you need to know more about, take a little bit of time to browse through the site, and if you are still a little unsure, do not hesitate to contact us info@luckyacepokerbonus.co.uk or check out our favorite MTT Poker Site
